May Edochie, the separated spouse of Nollywood actor Yul Edochie, is seeking ₦1 billion in damages from her previous attorney, Emeka Ugwuonye, charging him with slander, online harassment, and betrayal of trust.
In a cease-and-desist correspondence issued via her legal team, Graylaw Partners, May accused Ugwuonye of disseminating false and damaging statements about her on his social media accounts. She characterized his behavior as a deliberate attack on her reputation and personal security.
According to the correspondence, Ugwuonye’s posts “have been delivered in a tone and style that goes beyond mere slander, embodying mockery, unwarranted and harmful behavior, and spiteful threats, while also propagating clearly false allegations.”
May further claimed that Ugwuonye has established and manages several online platforms, including a WhatsApp group, created specifically to damage her reputation. She charged him with unlawfully disclosing her confidential information on those platforms for financial gain.
The correspondence also disclosed that Ugwuonye had previously portrayed himself as a legal professional to her, despite not possessing the legal authority to do so.
“By doing so, you deceitfully took advantage of our client’s ignorance, represented yourself in a deceitful manner, and are now generating illicit profits from her confidential information in addition to your slanderous publications,” the correspondence stated.
May pointed out that Ugwuonye’s posts have empowered others to amplify the defamatory narratives, exacerbating the injury to her reputation.
Her demands encompass the prompt removal of all defamatory posts, a public apology and retraction on all his platforms, and the payment of ₦1 billion in damages.
